Meditation is a gateway to spiritual rest. Bathtubs are tools for major physical relaxation. But what if you're a working mom or dad? What if your job is taking all of your time? Meditation in the bathtub is a great way to consolidate your relaxation time and to mentally, spiritually and physically reinvigorate yourself! But, if you're a beginner or have never practiced bath time meditation, you may be stuck. Here are three tips for a beginner to follow when trying bath time meditation:

1. Choose the right music

There are many different types of meditation. If you are experienced at meditation, then you may have a favorite track to meditate to- or perhaps you like silent meditation- but if you're new to the concept of meditation, there are many guided meditations to choose from on applications like Spotify and YouTube. The difference between guided meditation and music meditation is that typically, during a guided meditation, there is someone there to lead you on your breathing and visualizations. This can be easier for people who are not practiced at meditation.

2. Set aside alone time

It can be very disrupting if you do not set alone time for your bath time meditation. Determine how long you wish to meditate- this is typically ten to fifteen minutes for beginners but can be much longer for practiced meditation- and set your phone to "do not disturb" for that amount of time. Be sure you lock the doors and create the best environment for self-reflection. If there is something that has been bothering you in your daily life, make sure that you do not have any reminders of that stress around you. If you have children, as your partner or friend to watch them for the duration of your meditation. If you have alarms set, be sure to turn them off. This is the time for you to relax! Make the most of it!

3. Choose relaxing aromas

Using bath bombs, bath salts or essential oils can do a lot to relax the body, and therefore relax the mind and the spirit. If energy is your goal, perhaps try a citrus essential oil or bath bomb. If you wish to sleep better, perhaps try chamomile. For relaxation and a decrease in anxiety, try lavender. Or, maybe just choose your favorite scent!

4. Make sure you are physically comfortable

If your bathtub or shower is cramped but you want to get serious about meditation, it may be time to invest in a new bathtub. That's where we come in. Regardless of whether or not you meditate in the bathtub, this is important for all modes of meditation. If you are cramped, in pain, or uncomfortable, then you won't be able to reach the level of relaxation and concentration that you need to.

5. Breathe deeply and be present in the moment

Be sure you are present enough to truly enjoy the moment. Focus on the warm water, your breath and the sensations you experience listening to the music and breathing in the aroma you chose. Make sure you are in a good enough place to truly be present. Push everything from your mind. If you find yourself preoccupied, take a moment to truly focus on your breathing. This is a time to be with you. Take advantage of it!

Regardless of whether you're a beginner or a pro, a spiritual guru or a newbie, a single mom or a mechanic, bath time meditation is definitely worth a shot!
